Rotate about view vector (Z-axis): Right mouse drag.
Roam is counterintuitive and annoying under the best of circumstances.
You are not 'panning' (in the sense of dragging the object(s)), but
moving the camera 'look-to' point. So you can either double-click at
the new point you want to look at (to make it center of view) or drag.
I have almost always used double-click.
Pan-zoom is a generally better mode to work in as you can 'roam' and
'zoom' (in/out with Left or Rt mouse) more freely than using Roam and
Zoom independently.
Check out all the options in the Image View Options dialog box. Other
preset camera views are available on a menu. You could also use Rotate
or Transform modules in your net to pre-rotate your objects into your
favored orientation, but Image Camera is still usable to inspect things
from different angles.

How does one rotate object about the view vector?
Basically, I am use to seeing my xyz axii rotated 90
deg ccw to the way that they are displayed in the
diagonal view.
Similarly, I to see something 90 deg ccw from the
front view?
BWT, Roam does not seem to work? Is it just my setup?
