I am probably more old-fashioned than you (I started in IT in 1961 !).
The PMI is of course an indispensable part of the HIS middleware.
For good figures, you should have a look in "Hospital Information Systems .
The next Generation" by Rudi van de Velde, Springer-Verlag, 1992.
