As you, and others have said, the problem lies with StuffIt Expander. Although I haven't tried it, I'm sure it would be fine with tar. I've noticed that mozilla mentions the same problem. My only point in raising this issue on this list is that a little note somewhere appropriate in the documentation would be a nice thing to add.
