As you, and others have said, the problem lies with StuffIt Expander. 
Although I haven't tried it, I'm sure it would be fine with tar. I've 
noticed that mozilla mentions the same problem.

My only point in raising this issue on this list is that a little note 
somewhere appropriate in the documentation would be a nice thing to add. 
Hopefully it won't become an FAQ, but at least if it does, you know 
about it now. ;)

I don't think you should fix anything to accomodate a broken StuffIt 
Expander -- let Aladdin fix their broken software, although, to be fair 
to Aladdin, I haven't gone looking for an update.
