About the problem you are facing, from what you have told us, I still cannot figure out what may be going wrong.. but you say that you have been able to log into the box as root. This means that authentication works just fine. So I am wondering if some other admin has changed the "openfiler" administrator password on the machine, using the web interface? You said you have had to train other admins.. please ask them if they have changed the admin password.
