What do you mean by « too broad »? If the change is from single pixel wide stems to multi-pixel side stems, perhaps the older version of Suse used freetype's byte code interpreter and the newer version does not.
If that is the case, perhaps recompiling freetype w/ the interpreter or a change to your fonts.conf will get the results you want.
