But, VistA, the grandaddy of Mumps installations, is open source. 
Hence, unless there is some extraordinary deficiency in the language
itself, any problems with it can be solved by the user relatively
easily.  If VistA were not open source, it would have to be lumped with
every other large installation.

In passing, I freely admit that it is not irrelevant that VistA was
created with a centralized administration who avoided the "best of
breed" approach.  I believe that the functional equivalent of that
central administration today is the internet and more specifically the
browser interface.  CVS can be used to collaborate an XML initiative as
easily as a C initiative, which is perhaps where we should be heading:
www.sourceforge.com.
