Hello Greg,
I am sorry that it has taken a couple of days to respond to your post. "We
live in interesting times", says the Chinese curse. The primary problems
with the MUMPS based systems are both political in nature as well as
technical. The technical problems have been with reliability. It has not
been uncommon to end up with corrupted databases as well as stale client
processes that really can only be solved by rebooting. I could understand
that from an NT box, but an AIX box...
The political problem has been with the UI. Management doesn't believe that
character-based UI can be as usable as GUIs. I think that they have seen
too many vendor demos in which the patient's vital signs are being graphed
in real-time from stored data. I use a CLI in many different environments,
and have no problems with a good CLI over a GUI any day. However,
management believes that since they are management, that entitles them to
make decisions.
I am trying to break out some time and travel over to the local VA and see
what systems they are running. BTW, if you want to continue this offline, I
understand.
BTW, I understand that an new ambulatory documentation system is likely to
be RFP soon. Does a VistA module have such capabilities?

In what sense was your experience has your experience with MUMPS based
systems been less than positive? Is it a user interface/usability issue?
In response to your other question, yes, VistA includes an Order Entry
module. In fact, Order Entry/Results Reporting (OE/RR) was the package that
evolved into CPRS, which is a GUI application on the client end, though it
is still "MUMPS/Fileman inside".

Hello Greg,
Does VistA have physician order entry or do the charge nurse/unit
coordinator/facilitator still place charges? How fat is the Delphi client?
The MUMPS systems that we use in house are all of the "roll-n-scroll"
variety. My whole point was that I hadn't had good experiences with MUMPS
based systems, and I was just questioning, (hopefully not attacking), the
whole VistA experience.
