There are different market segments. I would agree that not
much java two tier client/server is being written these
days. But the world I live in has gone to the internet, and
there, java/web application servers have a huge share of
both the academic and commercial market.
I just talked to a seasoned systems architect who has built
large scale systems using C++ and CORBA for the
transportation industry which are not only mission critical
but require high degree's of assurance, and he has moved his
entire company to J2EE using enterprise java beans and now
builds B2B and B2C 24x7 worldwide systems. His experience:
