Hi all, due to my own work in implementing both mysql and postgresql in care2x (I am now into DB2 and Oracle) I have gathered enough experience to support my opinion about the two db's. But I will refrain from publishing my opinion to avoid getting stuck in this "dirty mud slinging war". We have had a phase of ugly flame wars in our mailing list about this and the uncomfortable memories are still fresh. The end-result? Nothing gained, just "wounded wannabe crusaders".
My honest plea to the postgresql "warriors", please drop your "attack-mysql" strategy. It is not getting you anywhere and you risk the danger of waking up someday that you have no more valid arguments to support your attacks. Yes, you have solid arguments now, but the other camp is not sleeping and with the help of its very wide user base, it will develop very quickly to invalidate your arguments. Actually, some of the arguments are already invalid but you are still clinging to it. In the end, you will have to ask yourself: "what have we gained from all of those past efforts?". The answer is painful: Nothing, just wasted time. We should not forget that both postgresql and mysql are foss projects. There is no sense that they should attack each other (the one being more aggressive and somewhat ruthless). Technical superiority alone is not a guarantee to success. Do not forget that psychology plays a very significant role. The current picture of the two warring camps is like this: mysql camp is having a meeting with representatives from commercial world inside an elegant conference hall paid by msql company (it has money), while a crowd of postgresql crusaders are marching outside in front of the conference hall gates, wielding streamers and placards and shouting "down, down with mysql!". Looks famiiar? Now, here's a question: if a common person comes along and sees that, whom will he trust? Who will he be afraid of? Never forget psychology. This is not a nice picture. Please drop this war strategy and switch to a more friendly-convincing-trust-building style. It is not yet too late. Respectfully Elpidio Latorilla
