So it is strange that you did not stumbled over PostgreSQL - at
least for me.  Uhmm, seems like I stepped in the middle of a flame
war and I'll leave it immediately, but without any doubt it is
possible that all these institutions and companies you mentioned can
use MySQL for a certain purpose because MySQL is certainly a good
and professional database.  The problem is that all things have
their purpose and you should check for what purpose they used it.
You would certainly use no Porsche if you would have to transport
about 50 people at once.  This would require a bus while there
is no doubt that a Porsche is a nice car and there are prominent
people who drive it.
