Can you send me a run with --drawmsg run with openipmicmd? Some BMCs will simply not respond to an invalid command instead of returning an error code. OpenIPMI thinks it has lost a connection when this occurs. This is, of course, a violation of the spec, but needs to be accounted for. I'm guessing that's what's happening here.
