I was thinking the same thing yesterday, but hadn't filed the issue yet. I just now filed:

https://bugs.openjdk.org/browse/JDK-8299595

If you are willing to do this, it would be appreciated. You can assign the bug to yourself. It will need a CSR and a release note.

My recommendation is that it be done without any refactoring of the sources, so that it is minimally intrusive. The changes would then be limited to removing the build task from build.gradle, and removing GTK 2 as an option in "launcher.c" (leaving the logic in place in case we later want to support gtk4 and gtk3 in the same way we support gtk3 / gtk2 today).

I think it is absolutely worth considering that.
I actually thought we already had an issue for discussing this, but I seem to be unable to do search queries on JBS atm.

I can't think about configurations that are stuck on GTK2 and that are still relevant today, but it would be good to get input from others in case such configurations are still in use.

Would a merge request to remove gtk2 support on the JavaFX 21
    release be welcome?
