OK, I understand that while there is no difference in performance between layer.WMS and layer.MapServer objects I could use the latter on a mapfile which is not enabled as WMS. I would thus restrict the publication to my own geoportal and not make the map (image!) available to other WMS clients. Well, there is really no reason for doing so, but here comes the interesting question: What if I wanted to share my data as WMS but at the same time needed full WFS-like access in my own web application? Is there an equivalent to a MapServer layer? I admit I haven’t yet fully understood the differences between layer.WFS (will disappear soon? why?) and layer.Vector objects with protocols and strategies. But they all work on WFS, don’t they?

I don’t want to discuss the topic of sharing data here, I am a believer.

Best regards,
Stefanie
