If you need to load data from the OSM database (live), you may want to try the XAPI protocol instead : http://trac.osgeo.org/openlayers/ticket/2786 A quick demo is available here : http://maps.qualitystreetmap.org/openlayers/examples/osm_xapi.html Forget about loading 50Mb in a vector layer : rather ~1Mb.
