I was thinking about a local database. Xapi can be slow (I had to go

I've built my own sample (http://www.orpatec.ch/osm/tools/testcanal.php) based on the above URL and discovered that XAPI is practically not usable. Therefore I've started a discussion in OSM dev about creating a caching proxy script yet it hasn't come far since XAPI seems not do be considered an important part of OSM.

My intention is to have a PHP proxy script which just stores each request locally in a file/database. Unfortunately I haven't much time to work on that as well, so I gladly welcome anybody who joins in.

A similar solution could be realized in the browser in Javascript but I guess this has to wait until browser support HTML5 which has some storing facilities. Up to now IMO a PHP proxy is the only solution.
