Oops, didn't read that correctly. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think openlayers really supports that. The google.v3 layer (http://dev.openlayers.org/docs/files/OpenLayers/Layer/Google/v3-js.html) supports "animated" zooms, e.g. http://imapinvasives.org/nyimi/map/, but I believe that's the extent of it.
