I agree. In particular, a simple VID/PID check wouldn't help people who have connected multiple debug adapters of the same type, while a serial number check can distinguish them. I do have this feature in the AVR counterparts for OpenOCD, AVRDUDE, and AVaRICE. At times, I've been debugging four setups in parallel that way. We used to have the trailing serial number digits labelled on top of our debug dongles in the lab.
