Well, after a couple more bootstraps, configures, etc, that error
disappeared. Probably when I exported LDFLAGS+=-L/usr/local/lib if I
had to guess.
Also, I needed to add
#elif defined(__FreeBSD__)
HostOs = "linux";
to line 1364 of src/helper/command.c, which I noticed is generated on
configure, so obviously, the fix really belongs elsewhere.

Missed the warning about libftdi < 0.16; upgraded to 0.17, and
everything's shiny....
So, to recap, looks like all I need is the tweak to command.c to
maintain freebsd compatibility.
