The 1728 is fixed. The number of pixels down the page will vary with the 
page length.

That probably needs adding to the FAQ. :-\

Standard FAX is 204 pixels per inch across the page and 98 pixels per 
inch down the page.
Fine FAX is 204 pixels per inch across the page and 196 pixels per inch 
down the page.
Super-fine FAX is 204 pixels per inch across the page and 392 pixels per 
inch down the page.

There are other resolutions for FAXes with different sized paper, but 
you rarely see these.
