First we've to get our patches working with RPM 4.1 and then the result
bootstrapping again for OpenPKG. After this we'll consider adding more
portability fixes like yours.

The problem is that we need a compression utility where the
decompression tool is available really everywhere without having to blow
up the bootstrapping dependencies. uncompress is available really on all
Unix flavors, ranging from ancient versions to modern ones. If we use
things like gzip, we would have to compile gunzip ourself, but using a
compiler is not the intented way for the binary bootstrap installation
procedure. So we have a problem here. As far as I see it, we have to
stick with compress or do not compression for the binary bootstrap at
all...
