If you go OpenPKG, you depend on an additional vendor,
now you have to look after Suse/Novell and OpenPKG.
In addition a Free Software vendor (many GNU/Linux distributors)
will give you the freedom to continue supporting their packages,
so you have it fully under control as opposed to proprietary unix-vendors.

The problem is the additional price, 
if Novell and RedHat had and option for base system 
(kernel + devices + filessystem) only without application,
this is the price difference that OpenPKG could get more easily.
