I've solved this problem. mdac_typ.exe quite spectacularly crashed my
machine, but I got some older ODBC drivers (thank god for a free net
connection!) and it works. If I type php at the command line it quietly
waits for input.
However, if I try the test php script through the Apache server, it still
says:
Not Found
The requested URL /opensa/php/php.exe/default/info.php was not found on this
server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an
ErrorDocument to handle the request.

What directives concerning php are people using in httpd.conf?
