If you only want to use some maps in a garmin haldheld please consider:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/DE:OpenSeaMap_and_Garmin_nautical_chart_plotter
The gmapsupp.img's are there ready to use which makes the use of makegmap
etc unnesersarily.
