yes and no.  As part of a project that we are doing here, we have 
written a very generic request processor that allows us to load models, 
textures, just about anything in the background and from network (URL) 
links.  The plan was/is to contribute this back to OpenSG, but we just 
haven't had time yet to clean it up and commit it.  If there is interest 
in the code, we could put it in earlier and let people hack on it a bit.
