I don't think that will be that much of a problem with upcoming hardware generations. I can imagine that upcoming cards/drivers won't have hardware fixed-function pipelines any longer but emulating those in the driver anyway (via shaders). It's only an assumption but for me this would be the straight-forward way of graphics-hardware-evolution ;) Just my 2c!
