I can see his argument that this an area where you're probably going to get a 
lot of 
user-defined/command-line parameters, so having the ability to store those 
without having to know 
what type they are might be useful.

Given that it's not a performance-critical part I wouldn't mind having lexical 
casts in there when a 
  file is loaded, so I'd vote for strings.
