given that I've seen graduate(d) cs students struggle with the concepts
and usage of git, staying with svn might be the better option. Those who
want to use git locally can easily do so as there is a good and so far 
reliable direct connection between both of them. You can easily publish
your own tree. What we might want to do use github as a central location
where people can easily publish their trees.
