Hm, that's interesting. What card are you running, and what driver? We
have a tool to run low-level OpenGL tests
(http://aegisknight.org/glscry), and that sees display lists very close
to VBOs (closer than I remember, but VBOs are not faster).

OK, I see. Well, you don't have to use the ProxyBuilder, you can write
that yourselves. But the ProxyGroup really is designed exactly for this
situation, so I think would be better to use it instead of writing
something new yourself.

Essentially the core problem is splitting the model into independent
parts. If you can get that done, creating the ProxyGroups for it is
simple.
