I just updated to the latest driver release for my kernel (not sure when it was
released, but it's pretty recently) and shaders now work in my program on my
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro 128MB. For reference, here are the versions :

Old version:
Kernel:      2.6.13-1.1532_FC4
ATI driver:  ati-fglrx-8.18.6.1-0.lvn.1.4

New version:
Kernel:      2.6.14-1.1637_FC4
ATI driver:  ati-fglrx-8.19.10.1-0.lvn.1.4

That's on Fedora Core 4 of course, downloaded from the Livna repository
(rpm.livna.org).

It's a bit depressing to see that we're that much at the mercy of the video card
manufacturers, but at least it works now. Thanks again for your help in
eliminating other potential sources for the problem...
