Hello,
if you want to keep the number of NameAttachments small you could add them
just to the "root" node of your models (IIRC VRML models may result in more
than one GeometryCore). From the node returned by getHitObject() you then
traverse the scene graph upwards until you come to one of the model roots
and read the name from its attachment.
