I agree that these are also issues.

These two may be related.  If we could get better documentation in the 
code (for example using doxygen to document what each parameter and 
method does) and then use wiki to keep a running "developers guide" that 
is always up-to-date with the latest features in the development 
codebase.  This guide doesn't have to be fully fleshed out, but even 
pointers would help.  As you say, right now the only way to figure out 
how to use most of the advanced features is to load up a test 
application and try to reverse engineer what the API means from that.  
This is painful at best and impossible at worst.
