configure accepts more options, but some of them are only historic
leftovers or for very unusual situations. Most of the interesting
options deal with support for image formats (gif, tiff, png, jpeg) and
other external libraries (e.g. Qt). These options are available with
both build methods (./configure --help or ./scons --help give you a list
of options).

I don't think you'll miss any important features because of the build
method you choose, so I suggest the scons build, since its options cover
all the interesting stuff without historic cruft ;)

I believe it is still mostly developed on this architecture, although
x86_64 seems to be quite popular these days. So it certainly works
there, but you have to compile it yourself as well.

Hope it helps,
        Carsten
