The extension is EXT_framebuffer_object. I don't think they've been added to an 
OpenGL version yet.

It would be noticeably more expensive. It might still be good enough to be 
useful, but FBOs are definitely the better approach.

Yeah, you can. You would need to do the Z- and frame-filling in your own code 
and use a PassiveBackground. I was more thinking about writing a new Background 
that takes a Z and Frame image (or texture) and clears the screen with them, 
but 
to get strated the PassiveBackground might work better.
