hm, some ideas you might want to try/explore:

have you tried large positive values ? minWallDistance should 
definitively be positive, what value to use depends on your model though.
Are your lower resolution "collision" scene and the rendered scene 
correctly aligned ?
Is your near clipping plane set correctly? It might be that the 
navigator keeps the eye position in front of the wall, but the near 
clipping plane is already on the opposite side, so you can see through 
the wall.
