I think this would be useful from time to time. The original semantics 
originate in VRML (and scenegraphs of *OLD*). I don't know the reason as 
to why they did is as they did, but someone who was around back in those 
days might be able to shed some light on it? (I'm curious)

Actually, we did implement something very similar in an Cosmo3D-based 
application that was in development 5-6 years ago. That too lacked a 
'bitmask switch' node (just as the VRML-spec does)
