A great place to start would be to get XMPP/jabber chat linked up with Opensim as an alternative to the IRC linkup.
The look at how to allow more useful communication via the XML payloads which XMPP/Jabber can carry. I believe several folks have experimented with Jabber/XMPP chat client link up, but am not aware of a stable module for Opensim.
