I think they want the independence, using a self hosted solution. You can not do that with GitHub. For having the issues, pull requests etc. on your own server.
That is the reason for Blender at least. So that for example some day if they'd prefer something else than GitHub, they would not be in trouble by having all that data there. Or if GitHub went down or something. Blender uses a self-hosted http://phabricator.org/ -- an open source github like web & command line tools thing, seems pretty cool actually, there are equivalents of Pull Requests in those interestingly named tools 'Differential', 'Maniphest' etc. For realXtend things we've just used GitHub. Seems unlikely there'd be problems with it as so much of the world has moved there .. including even Microsoft substantially now (with .Net), and already earlier so much all kinds of things, independent, corporate, even government projects in some places iirc etc. I do appreciate the Blender and Opensimulator independence spirit and the good jobs done with self hosted things. I do *not* want to advocate anything on this really and suppose it was discussed enough when the decision was made. Anyhow figured to mention that would probably have gone with GitHub myself -- then again I wasn't even in the talks. The benefits are nice and I don't see danger really. Anyone has the full history in the clones anyway (or at least you can mirror so that get all branches etc to own server), and perhaps they have APIs for the issues and such if you wanna keep backups / own copies in case? If the very unlikely happens that there'd be trouble, could then perhaps migrate to phabricator or gitorious or something. Just to allow focus on software dev, not server hosting. Then again many of the opensim folks are out there exactly to host their servers to run the sims also etc. so that's just me :) ~Toni On Thu, Jun 25, 2015 at 7:53 PM, Blake <[email protected]> wrote: > Greetings, > > Was this migration discussed somewhere?
