Hi, the storage of data from an application within a container should be limited - however as long as the authentication system has not been clarified it is yet unknown. However the straight forward approach for you as an gadget developer is to store some data within your app server and not only in the container. So you could theoretically link user data between different networks - if this is allowed by the network. - And again this has not explicitly specified yet.
I suspect that each network requires from an application the agreement to their terms of usage, where they might restrict the data handling. It could also be interesting whether the application developer have to agree their usage within each container as well. Who wants his application to be run in an illegal or non ethical environment? Facebook is showing already a running system and might give solutions to the outstanding problems of OpenSocial, they solved the security issue and integrated app keys for access. Hopefully the authentication issue will be solved in OpenSocial within the next couple of days and then we will become a much clearer picture of the whole system. What me concerns right now is the lack of support for gadgets of type url and the potential security problem with filtered content. Anyway the development of the API and implementations seems to work quite well and we could expect a solution to the most concerning issues rather earlier than later.
