Sorry Julian, may be in the future, right now they require a registered google account, thus it will work only for Orkut and other networks having google users.
Spinning it forward this would also require that each web gadget redirects to a login formular and without having a turn-back url no user could continue to use his social network. I don't want to go into the details, so please revisit the APIs for furhter understanding. So for now, only the Javascript API could be used for integrated gadgets.
