This is going to be a Container-specific policy decision. Orkut will likely not share Viewer data with applications running in Profile mode - instead, the application will get a blank "stub" object for viewers who have not explicitly shared their information with the application. This is to help guard each viewer's privacy, but it will likely break the functionality you're looking for. I can't really speak for other sites, but I'd imagine that they would have similar privacy-preserving policies in place.
