What is the recommended best practice for setting up a development
environment for developing opensocial apps? Deploying to a server and
then reloading in an container like iGoogle everytime I make a change
is just too slow for real development.

I have a rails server which generates application XML files. I find
developing these extremely difficult because there's no simple way to
test these locally. I've tried setting up both the java and php
versions on Shindig, but both give errors on applications which work
fine in iGoogle. I know of the Eclipse plugin, but I can't use that
because my application files are dynamically generated. I also can't
use DropBox or similar for the same reason.

I'm used to unit testing my code etc. and now I feel like I'm just
hacking and blundering along. Surely other developers aren't doing
this so I'd be interested to hear more about others development
environments.
