I haven't personally used MAMP, but I see no reason why it shouldn't work.
If you are running into 404 errors there's a good chance that maybe
mod_rewrite isn't enabled in it's apache config?

On my mac's I took a slightly different route, which I've documented here in
a step-by-step-guide, if MAMP keeps giving you problems that might be a good
alternative:
