I've been meaning to send it for some time...

I agree completely with Cyril, as a storage nut I'd upgrade Network Storage to HIGH. Leveraging those elements in OpenSolaris can really help hilite some interesting technology and provide some fun oppertunities for the project.

Luckily, this one probably doesn't matter much since they are really close to open sourcing this consolidation. I don't mind moving this to high if others are interested.

(Incidently, if someone can slip the Sun iSCSI Target Implementation into Network Storage I'd be eternally greatful.)

But, stepping back, I should point out that we don't know whats in these consolidations beyond what we can surmise based on the title. Having an idea of exactly what is in each consolidation would be immensely helpful and informative, not just for OpenSolaris but for Solaris users curious about how the product comes together.

Good point. Someone within Sun mentioned that as well, and I completely forgot about it when I sent this mail -- sorry. What would be useful? I can probably send out a document that has a mapping of every package to its consolidation, but that might be a bit overwhelming. I can tell you that it is excellent for searching, but I think it's 20 pages long. In any case, just reading it is mind-numbing.

Would a good description of the kinds of things in the consolidation work, or do you need more detail?

Reguarding Xorg, SFW and JDS/GNOME; I strongly believe that there should be no (or little) reason to open source these as they are already open sourced projects. The work that Sun has done on either of these should be contributed back to the projects and made avalible in an open repository (ftp will do) for any instances of work not accepted by the project in question. I guess there are some bits of JDS that Sun might not want to give back to GNOME, but it all looks pretty standard GNOME to me minus the theme and images, although I'm not a JDS guy myself and my be misunderstanding.

What will be provided on opensolaris.org will be the differences -- code downloaded from the appropriate open source community will be required to build. Additionally, we will be encouraging people to make most of the changes in the main community. Most of what would be delivered here will be Makefile changes to make it buildable with the Sun Studio 10 compilers (I think, and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong).

DevPro is essentual, thats what Joerg has needed and I think several of us have been waiting for before implementing additional distros. I'd love to see all of the installation tools open sourced. I can't think of any reason that they would want to be protected. I'm assuming the actual installer is in "Install: Rest of the consolidation", which I'd love to see, although I'll agree low priority is probly most appropriate.

Installer is "Install: Rest of the consolidation".

What concerns me is Admin Tools being low priority. What admin tools are we talking about? If its SMC and the admins GUIs, then I could care less.

It's SMC and the admin. GUIs. The packaging tools will be done separately.

I'd also personally bump the docs to high so that people can start ramping up to get involved more closely with the doc effort.

If others agree, we can bump the main documentation one to high. The others (aside from man pages) will stay at medium.

The CCD is, of course, a whole diffrent matter. Personally, I'd drop it to low.

How about the ones that we don't have plans to open source? Any issues there?

Thanks for the input!

I've pulled together my preliminary thoughts on the relative priorities
of open sourcing the other Solaris consolidations, and would like you
all to comment on the list and priorities below.

These priorities are not temporally influenced: we did not list
consolidations as a "HIGH" priority just because they will be available
next and items that are "HIGH" may not be available for quite some time.

The priority should be a reflection of how important the
code/functionality is to the community, and I'm sure I didn't get it all
right. The goal of this is to give everyone a sense of what the
priorities for the program should be.

Feedback by next week (9/13) would be appreciated. We'll be rolling this
into a status dashboard that will be posted externally in the coming
weeks, so there will be opportunities to adjust the priorities moving
forward. Stay tuned for more information.

Thanks,

Karyn
