been there .. done that ... :-(

but I just installed fresh snv_98 rev ( or whatever it is called ) and it
went in sweetly for my obscure bizarre hardware here :

$ uname -a
SunOS aequitas 5.11 snv_98 i86pc i386 i86pc
$ cat /etc/release
                          OpenSolaris 2008.11 snv_98 X86
           Copyright 2008 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
                        Use is subject to license terms.
                           Assembled 15 September 2008

$ psrinfo -pv
The physical processor has 1 virtual processor (0)
  x86 (CentaurHauls 6A9 family 6 model 10 step 9 clock 1200 MHz)
        VIA Esther processor 1200MHz

of course .. once I get it in there .. I find that I can not compile
anything because all the headers and various bits I need are missing ...
but I think that can be done with a pkg install some-dev-thing

try the latest iso .. just once ..
