That could just be a fluke of the ISP webserver (not responding quickly
enough).

Add a "search" line to resolv.conf and that should fix it (as long as it
is valid and doesn't contain "net")

OK, thanks for your help, it all makes sense now. I guess this is something to watch out for in the future when setting up resolver config files.
