I just realised something, 'domainname' returns localnet.net, maybe

valid name, takes web pages to other web servers??
That could just be a fluke of the ISP webserver (not responding quickly
enough).
Add a "search" line to resolv.conf and that should fix it (as long as
it
is valid and doesn't contain "net")

OK, thanks for your help, it all makes sense now. I guess this is
something to watch out for in the future when setting up resolver config
files.
Perhaps this undesirable behaviour should be avoided by making DHCP add a
'search' line to resolv.conf if that disables the default resolver
behaviour. I've been bitten by this when using .org local domains, because
of the "com.org" domain wildcard.
Perhaps, but IMO the real problem was allowing .com.net .com.org in the
first place they just shouldn't have been allowed as they only cause
confusion. Same goes for .uk.com and other similar ccTLD's below the
.com TLD.
