It still is one of the best choices, but the Solaris development from the past
two years is no longer what it has been in former times. If we are not able to
revert this tendency, Solaris will be dead soon. I am not sure who inside Sun
is responsible for the change, but it is somehow correlated with the move
towards Indiana only.

It is sad to see that Sun did invent openat() in August 2001 but that Sun did
not listen anymore to the discussions in the POSIX standard mailing list. We
still do not have the O_SEARCH and O_DIRECTORY flags that are needed in order
to be able to completely use openat() for longer path names.

Other details of deviation from recent POSIX standards may be called "of minor
importance", but O_SEARCH and O_DIRECTORY verify that something noticable did
happen with the intentions behind the Solaris development.

At the same time, I noticed that several long term Sun employees have been
fired.
