To be fair, before SO8 finally arrived, it was essentially impossible for Sun's 
non-engineers (those in sales, marketing, legal, etc.) to use any office suite

I guess everyone must have heard the rumor that Google is going to buy a bunch 
of Sun's Galaxies to allow its intended/planned (eventually ubiquitous) Wi-Fi 
customers run StarOffice/OpenOffice.org.  When everyone begins to exchange 
OpenDocument files across the net, it will be very difficult to stop 
Solaris/OpenSolaris desktops.

When I first got to Sun five years ago there was a fair amount of Office files flying around here, but mostly from agencies, contractors, and partners we worked with. A lot of us used to send 'em back and ask for text. :) There's very little now, though. It's really mostly StarOffice/OpenOffice these days.
