FWIW, I use it when I need to - spreadsheets, presentations and the like.
Sometimes it is with much griping and frustration, especially when we
are trying to work with alpha and beta versions....
For me and for most of my engineering co-workers, the alternative is gvim
or emacs or an IDE, and not MSWord, so we may not be the right demographic.
Most of my non-engineering co-workers (Program management, business
analysts, mid and upper management) use it exclusively; I'm not aware[*]
of anyone who uses MSWord instead.

with them. The vast majority of non-engineers at Sun use thin client
SunRay desktops with Solaris 9 or 10; we simply don't use PCs in those
environments.

Well, I wouldn't draw too many conclusions from your interactions with
one employee given the size of Sun. Do you know if they were a
full-time employee, some form of contractor, etc.
I know several forum members mentioned that they are using OOo/SO, but on a
face-to-face basis (though I have to admit that my contacts with Sun are very
limited), I have yet to see a Sun employee/contractor/sales rep--or even a
Sun's lawyer, who is using StarOffice (or OpenOffice.org).
