Build 23 does not configure network by default.  & the original poster was 
talking using gaim as one of his main applications.

The best option is to get a Fedora Core 4 DVD, install it, then go to the 
"Fedora Core 4 Installation Notes" to perform a post-installation 
supplementation:

(The former contains pretty much the same info as the later, but is more 
up-to-date.)

I am sure eventually Solaris/OpenSolaris will be as handy as a fully 
supplemented Fedora Core.  It just takes time.
